Irvine Patnick did not attend the match at Hillsborough, however he responded to the BBC TV coverage by attending at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Hammerton Road Police Station, the Niagra police training ground and accompanying Colin Moynihan, Minister for Sport, when he arrived in Sheffield. He also gave several local media interviews on the night.
