This page explains the contents of the XML and CSV files that are provided as 'Open data'.

Whichever format is chosen, the content of the download is the same, except for some header information at the start of the XML file.

The download contains the metadata for each item in the Catalogue. 'Metadata' is information that describes content (such as the information on the label on the outside of a tin). The metadata for disclosed material includes the title, description and date(s). This is information displayed on the Catalogue entry and the document landing page (ie the page you get to just before you download a disclosed document) but provided as a downloadable table, so it can be filtered and sorted more flexibly than is possible on the website itself.

The table below lists the metadata fields included in the disclosed material download (in effect, the column headings in the CSV or XML table).

Open data export field descriptions

Field Description
Unique ID A 15-character unique identification number used to track the item through the Panel Review process.
Title The title of the item.
Description A description of the item. Not all items have a description.
Contributor reference The contributor's own reference ID for the item. Not all contributors have assigned IDs to their material, so this field may be empty.
Start date Date the item was created, in yyyy-mm-dd format. If the material spans a range of dates - for instance because it contains more than one document - this field will hold the date that corresponds to the start of that range. For example some disclosed "documents" are actually collections of papers, potentially each with different dates, that were treated as one item when scanned as part of the Panel Review process.
End date If the material spans a range of dates - for instance because it contains more than one document - this field will hold the date that corresponds to the end of the range. Otherwise it will be empty.
Name(s) of the deceased Names of the 96 that are referenced in the disclosed item (or its title or description).
Person(s) involved Names of people frequently mentioned in the Panel's Report that are referenced in the disclosed item.

Sub-folder title A sub-folder name used to further refine the grouping of disclosed items.
Original format The physical format of the original item, prior to digitisation.
Format The file format in which the item is stored within the Disclosure website.
Disclosure status This field will be empty if the item has been disclosed on the website, otherwise it will contain a summarised reason for non-disclosure (as displayed on the 'catalogue of all material considered for disclosure' page).
Reason not disclosed on this site This field will be empty if the item has been disclosed on the website, otherwise it will contain more information about the reason for non-disclosure (as displayed on the document landing page).
Duplicate Set to 'Yes' for items that have not been disclosed on the website because they are duplicates of other items that are available to view on the site. Otherwise it will be blank.
Document landing page URL The URL for the Disclosure website page that presents both the metadata associated with the item and, where the item is available to view on the site, a link to download the item itself.
Document URL The URL for the disclosed item itself. Blank for items that are not available on this website.
Copyright This information is part of the metadata of the online archive of documents on the Hillsborough Disclosure website and is covered by Crown Copyright. It includes the URL of the disclosed document itself. Ownership of the copyright to disclosed documents varies depending on their source.
